Hamdan bin Mohammed Al Maktoum has been the crown prince of Dubai since 2008. He is the third son of the prime minister and ruler of Dubai, His Highness Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, who is also the vice president of UAE. Following the footsteps of his father, the prince has shown utmost modesty and simplicity even while living a super-luxurious and royal lifestyle. He is popularly known as Fazza, which means “the one who helps” in Arabic. A multi-talented personality, Hamdan is a published poet, photographer, horse rider and skydiver. The Upbringing of Sheikh Hamdan

Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum was born on November 14, 1982, in Dubai. He grew up in a large and closely-knit family with 12 siblings.

His educational journey took him to the renowned Royal Military Academy at Sandhurst in the UK, where he graduated in 2001. His thirst for knowledge extended to economics. So he attended specialised courses at the London School of Economics and the Dubai School of Government. 

Sheikh Hamdan’s education has been diverse and comprehensive. He attended Rashid School for Boys before starting his studies at the Dubai School of Government. Then he graduated from the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst (RMAS). His time at RMAS instilled in him essential values like commitment, discipline, teamwork, and hard work. Later, he pursued further studies at the London School of Economics which added even more depth to his education.

Beyond his formal education, Sheikh Hamdan’s true apprenticeship in leadership and public administration came from his father, H.H. Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum. He closely observed his father’s visionary leadership, from the days when Sheikh Mohammed was the Crown Prince of Dubai to his current role as the Ruler of Dubai.

From a young age, Sheikh Hamdan displayed diverse interests and talents. He developed a passion for photography, travel, and adventure and often shared his experiences with the world through his lens. Additionally, he gained acclaim as a Nabati poet. He writes patriotic and romantic poems under the pen name Fazza. He used his poetry art to connect with people and uplift their spirits.

Beyond his creative pursuits, Sheikh Hamdan is an accomplished athlete, excelling in camel racing, horse riding, and car racing. His horse-riding achievements are particularly noteworthy. He has numerous gold and bronze medals in prestigious championships, including the World Youth Endurance Championship in 2001 and the FEI World Endurance Championship in 2008.

Position and Responsibilities of Sheikh Hamdan

His Highness Sheikh Hamdan is a prominent figure in the United Arab Emirates and he holds several vital positions that play a significant role in the governance and development of the region. As the Deputy Ruler of Dubai since February 1, 2008, he has been a key contributor to the leadership of the emirate. He has been working alongside his father, His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, who serves as the Ruler of Dubai. 

One of his most significant responsibilities is his role as Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance in the Government of the United Arab Emirates. He has held these positions since September 25, 2021. These roles involve overseeing the financial affairs of the UAE and participating in decision-making processes at the federal level. It reflects his dedication to the economic prosperity and stability of the nation.

His Highness also plays a crucial role in Dubai’s local governance, serving as the Chairman of the General Budget Committee and the Board of Directors of the Federal Tax Authority, and holding positions as the Second Deputy of the Dubai Council and First Deputy of the Executive Council of Dubai. These roles involve strategic planning, policy formulation, and financial management. 

Furthermore, he was appointed as Chairman of the Court of His Highness Ruler of Dubai by a decree issued by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum. It showcases his role in ensuring the smooth functioning of the Ruler’s court and administrative affairs.

His Highness Sheikh Maktoum bin Mohammed’s leadership extends beyond governance and finance. He chairs various committees and authorities, including the Strategic Affairs Council, the Higher Committee for Supreme Legislation Committee, the Dubai Judicial Council, the Higher Committee for Government Sector Development, the Dubai Markets Supervisory Committee, specialised courts for capital markets, the Higher Committee for Real Estate Planning, the Dubai Investment Corporation, the Dubai International Financial Center, the Dubai Development Authority, and the Dubai Real Estate Corporation. Moreover, he contributes to philanthropic endeavours as a member of the Board of Trustees of the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Global Initiatives.

His leadership in equestrian sports was further highlighted when he led a team of riders at the Championships in Samorín in 2016.
